On the possibility of basing Cryptography on the assumption that P ≠ NP

چکیده
Recent works by Ajtai and by Ajtai and Dwork bring to light the old (general) question of whether it is at all possible to base the security of cryptosystems on the assumption that P 6 = NP. We discuss this question and in particular review and extend a two-decade old result of Brassard regarding this question. Our conclusion is that the question remains open.

On Basing Search SIVP on NP-Hardness
The possibility of basing cryptography on the minimal assumption NP * BPP is at the very heart of complexity-theoretic cryptography. The closest we have gotten so far is lattice-based cryptography whose average-case security is based on the worst-case hardness of approximate shortest vector problems on integer lattices. The state-of-the-art is the construction of a one-way function (and collisi...
متن کاملStudies in the Efficiency and (versus) Security of Cryptographic Tasks
In this thesis, we deal with the following questions: (1) How efficient a cryptographic algorithm can be while achieving a desired level of security? (2) Since mathematical conjectures like P 6= NP are necessary for the possibility of secure cryptographic primitives in the standard models of computation: (a) Can we base cryptography solely based on the widely believed assumption of P 6= NP, or ...
متن کاملOn Basing Private Information Retrieval on NP-Hardness
The possibility of basing the security of cryptographic objects on the (minimal) assumption that NP ⊈ BPP is at the very heart of complexity-theoretic cryptography. Most known results along these lines are negative, showing that assuming widely believed complexity-theoretic conjectures, there are no reductions from an NP-hard problem to the task of breaking certain cryptographic schemes. We mak...
متن کاملOn the Exact Cryptographic Hardness of Finding a Nash Equilibrium
The exact hardness of computing a Nash equilibrium is a fundamental open question in algorithmic game theory. This problem is complete for the complexity class PPAD. It is well known that problems in PPAD cannot be NP-complete unless NP = coNP. Therefore, a natural direction is to reduce the hardness of PPAD to the hardness of problems used in cryptography. Bitansky, Paneth, and Rosen [FOCS 201...
